about

Earthly Vistas is ambient composer Oils' sophomore album. The album is formed around little snapshots of Earth and takes its name from the way the ambient genre can sometimes be classified as landscape or ‘soundscape’ music.

Oils continues to craft narrative through music, and this album could read as a soundtrack to a film in the minds eye. The album teases a meditative quality in certain areas, but Oils is not wholly concerned with keeping you in that state. Tracks veer off in tangents, merge with each other and sometimes quickly get buried in walls of distortion.

Some of Oils' Vistas feel more open and panoramic, and some set within clear structural parameters. These ideas can be built upon abstract foundations, like the geography of the mind, or the landscapes at a microscopic level. To The Centre of All Things for example explores the idea of zooming into things as disparate as: a system of tunnels, or a bacteria petri dish, or living cells. Microscopic yet vast and ineffable, full of wonder and dread. The Regulator was informed less by nature and more by the rooftops of a sleepy city at night.

Some titles for tracks can be taken at more face value. Relaxed Waters conjures up lake shores. You experience Earthly Gaze from a sacred place of worship, until it transports you to the ‘heavens’ overlooking Earth. Deregulated has rolling filtered white noise pads that allude to the ocean. If the album is viewed for its meditative qualities, Double Vision is perhaps the most hallucinatory track of the album, offering up a psychedelic shifting landscape, more explored within the mind itself.

As with each of Oils’ previous albums, the artwork has developed alongside the music, in collaboration with a visual artist working in a unique medium. Damon Kearns generated a giant three dimensional digital world for the album, then photographed beautiful vistas within it.
